Chapter Twenty

“I’m sorry, what? It’s hard to hear through the mask,” I lied half-heartedly. The orderly, Shaun, a big bald guy with a jagged scar across his skull, looked tragically uncomfortable and shifted foot to foot sighing. This was the third time I was making him repeat himself because I was stuck here and had to keep myself entertained in whatever ways I could.

My eyes drifted to Nurse Rachel. I hated when the staff came back to life.

“Doctor Stein wants you downstairs with Nemo. He’s running more experiments and your presence is… desired,” he said through his teeth, looking disgusted. He wasn’t saying it, but I knew exactly what this was about. The fucking pheromone treatments. Either that or something worse.

Plus, Bree was still down there and I had struck up a deal with her for protection. The details of that hadn’t been fleshed out entirely. We hadn’t gotten that far since we were too busy masturbating in front of each other and trying to piss off Orson.

“Yes, well what I don’t get is why me? I’m not looking to be poked by the fucking bear. And by poked I mean fucked,” I said for the benefit of Shaun who looked disgusted at the prospect of same-sex fucking. Or hell, I don’t know maybe he was just disgusted because it was Nemo or me… or both of us.

Hard to figure out what got people off in a place like this. Sometimes the biggest freaks in here had the largest appeal. No doubt there was someone in their room right now thinking about the deadly masked man coming into their room and having his dirty way with them. Bunch of insane freaks. Although what did it say about me that I was who these freaks dreamed of? I coughed to hide my chuckle.

“Is Stein going senile? He does recall I’m a basilisk, right?” I asked. Stein was not going senile, he was up to something no good. My only guess was he wanted to see exactly how well Nemo was now able to withstand my venom.

I was sort of freaked out that Stein thought Nemo had increased immunity to me now. What would happen if he could actually touch my bare skin? No fucking idea. I mean obviously, I could still, if necessary, go ultra toxic and hurt him. But outside of fighting…

“Look, it’s either you or the new girl,” the orderly Shaun said.

“Yeah, okay. I choose the new girl,” I said. Honestly, I did plan to follow them downstairs but I was having some fun first. Shaun turned to Nurse Rachel and she shrugged.

“Nemo is more than capable of causing her harm unintentionally, once he gets going. Actually, he’s been chasing Bree through the halls at night. I heard her screaming,” she said. Was that intended to freak me out? I snorted. Pretty sure Bree would be into that.

“Whatever discomfort she has will be short-lived. Me, on the other hand, will have trauma branded on my mind.” Shaun and Rachel looked at each other.
